ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) – A former Rowan County Detention Center officer is charged with giving drugs to inmates, Rowan County deputies said Wednesday.

Dwayne Lamont Smith, 26 of Concord, was suspended on December 17 after becoming the focus of an internal investigation. He was fired Monday.

Smith is accused of giving marijuana, prescription medication and tobacco products to inmates in the Rowan County Jail. Deputies say Smith was hired on June 14 to work as an officer at the Rowan County Detention Center.

Tuesday, Smith was charged with two counts of furnishing a controlled substance to inmates and one felony count of furnishing a controlled substance to inmates.

To avoid putting Smith in the place where he allegedly committed the crime, he was placed in the Iredell County Jail and given a $15,000 bond, deputies say.
