ASHEBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — Randolph County Sheriff Maynard B. Reid Jr., who served in the post since 2006, has died of complications from pneumonia. He was 69.
Lt. Jason Chabot said Reid died at 9:40 p.m. Tuesday at Randolph Hospital, where he had been since Dec. 18.
Chabot said Deputy Chief Ed Blair will become interim sheriff until a new sheriff is appointed.
Reid was first elected sheriff in 2006 and just won his third four-year term in November 2014,
Reid was a US Marine veteran, served in Vietnam and graduated from Asheboro High School and Randolph Community College.
Gov. Pat McCrory released a statement late Tuesday night:
“Sheriff Reid demonstrated his deep commitment to his community, state and country through his public service as a Marine during the Vietnam War and as Randolph County Sheriff for the past 10 years. Ann and I ask North Carolinians around the state to keep the Reid family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
Reid is survived by his wife, Sandra, a former lieutenant with the sheriff’s office.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday at Sunset Avenue Church of God in Asheboro.
