RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The jackpot for Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing is now a stunning $500 million, officials confirmed.
Powerball officials have increased the jackpot for the second time in two after following massive ticket sales.
The jackpot would be worth $306 million if claimed as a lump sum.
This is the fourth largest jackpot in the game’s 23-year history.
Since 2006, four North Carolina players have won between $74 million and $188 million.
“It is exciting to kick off the New Year in a big way with a big jackpot,” said Alice Garland, the lottery’s executive director. “We appreciate our players’ enthusiasm but always remind folks: It only takes one ticket to win.”
The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
If no one wins from Wednesday’s drawing, the jackpot will likely surge past the game’s record amount of $590.5 million set in May 2013.
