RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – One person was killed in a house fire early Wednesday morning in Wake County, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office said.
Fire crews were called to a home on Porchlight Court around 5 a.m. in Wake County. That’s just south of Garner.
The home was destroyed in the blaze.
Sheriff Donnie Harrison said one person was killed in the fire. The victim was identified as 19-year-old David Israel Benzo Torres. Garner Fire Chief Matthew Poole said Torres was found in a bedroom.
The fire chief said a neighbor noticed the fire and called 911. By the time rescue crews arrived to the scene, it was too late.
“The time of day contributed to the size and the magnitude of the fire. When there is not a lot of traffic through a subdivision this time of night, it’s very difficult for someone to spot it and call it in. The fire had progressed far further than it normally would have during the daytime hours so that makes it more difficult and makes it a higher probability for someone to perish in the fire,” said Poole.
The sheriff’s office said at least two others lived at the house but were not home during the fire.
Fire officials ruled the fire as accidental undetermined.
