LUMBERTON, N.C. (WNCN) – A 3-year-old was killed when he accidentally shot himself Sunday with a gun kept behind the counter of a Lumberton business, police said.
The boy shot himself just before 11 a.m. at the store located at 2205 Martin Luther King Drive, police said.
The victim’s father, Manal Abdelaziz, 56, owns the store where the shooting occurred. He contacted police immediately.
The boy was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
On Monday afternoon, people left flowers, balloons and stuffed animals outside of the doors at the Minit Shop, which is the store owned by the father of the boy.
The 3-year-old boy was known around the community as “Cash” will be greatly missed and many people here are say their heart goes out to the dad, friends said.
“It’s just a terrible loss and I know he is very sad and hurt because I think he loved his child just like I loved mine,” said Sandra and Sammie Tilman, neighbors to the brothers Minit Shop.
Investigators will submit a report to the Robeson County District Attorney’s office for review to determine if charges will be filed.
