Wake County school bus driver cited after running red light, hitting car, police say

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A Wake County school bus ran a red light at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive near Poole Road on Tuesday, hitting a car that, according to the Raleigh Police Department.

Three people in the car were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The crash happened just before 9:30 a.m. when the bus driver, Gracie Jean Jones, age 53, of Wendell, drove the bus through a red light, according to a Raleigh Police wreck report.

The bus collided with a Kia driven by a Raleigh woman, the wreck report said.  About $2,500 in damage was caused to the car, police said.

No one on the bus was hurt, police said.

The scene had been cleared by 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Jones was citied with operate a motor vehicle on a street or highway while entering an intersection while a stop light was emitting a steady red light for traffic in defendant’s direction of travel, police said.
