NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Powerball jackpot is up to $1.5 billion. You may not, however, have to buy a ticket to win.
A Carolina Beach restaurant is offering you a piece of its winnings, but there’s a catch. Michael’s Seafood says if you download their app, the owner promises to share the money if they win.
The owner, Shelly McGowan, posted that promise on the restaurant’s Facebook page. The plan is to buy the ticket and post the numbers Wednesday morning. If you download the mobile app by 9 p.m. Wednesday and the tickets are winners, McGowan says she will evenly split the money with every person who supports the app.
“It’s actually a little bit more overwhelming than I thought it would be,” McGowan said. “I thought it would be a good way to get the word of the app out there and when money is involved people come out of the woodwork. I’m excited about it.”
To ensure the restaurant has contact information for everyone who downloads the app, there is an entry form you must fill out.
So what are the legal ramifications for those people making this promise? WECT has seen several similar posts about spreading the wealth popping up on social media.
“It would be a good problem to have,” Wilmington attorney Thom Goolsby said. “You could have the money to fight it and pay lawyers. You’d probably expect a fight from people who either expected their money or claimed that they somehow participated. If there’s enough money there, people will argue and fight about just about anything has been my experience.”
