FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (CNN/WSVN) – A 911 dispatcher in Fort Lauderdale, Florida is under fire after officials say an emergency call went unanswered because the dispatcher was ordering a pizza, CNN reported.
It was back in September at Clearsight Opticians that a man dropped to the floor after having a seizure in the exam room. The staff immediately called 911 to report the incident.
“First they called from their office, no answer. I called from my cellphone. Again, no answer. Other people in the store tried calling, and nobody picked up from the other end,” said store employee Jared Goodman.
Goodman said they let the phone ring for what they said felt like several minutes and no one answered, CNN reported.
After an internal investigation by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, it’s now clear why nobody answered the phone.
CNN reported that one of the call-takers was on an eight minute personal call – ordering lunch from a pizza shop in Loder Hill, Florida.
The sheriff’s office said the dispatcher admitted her mistake and was issued a written reprimand.
As for the patient in the office, he came to.
“Fortunately the man is okay. He came back to life, basically. He was having a seizure and he came back so he’s OK now,” Goodman said.
Goodman said that the scare is something they shouldn’t have to go through alone, CNN reported.
“If I call 911, someone should pick up that phone. It would make me feel a lot better,” he said.
