RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A Fort Bragg reservist from Spring Lake came forward as the winner of $2 million in last week’s Powerball drawing, lottery officials said.
“I didn’t believe it, it was a feeling I’ll never forget,” Johnny Charlestin said. “It’s the best birthday present I’ve ever had.”
He was celebrating his birthday with family when he realized he won, lottery officials said. He claimed his prize Tuesday.
Charlestin is part of the HQ Army Reserve Command at Fort Bragg.
After taxes, Charlestin walked away with $1,385,140, lottery officials confirmed.
He said he plans to help his mom and family with the winnings.
Charlestin purchased the winning $3 Power Play ticket at the Food Mart Express on Spring Avenue in Spring Lake.
Safwan Atara owns the Spring Lake store where the winning ticket was sold.
“I’m happy when I hear that, you know? It’s good for my business because it’s slow here. Maybe it will pick the business up,” said Atara.
Atara said he is glad he has had winners in the past but never something as big as this.
