TROUTMAN, N.C. (WBTV) – A father has been charged after his 6-year-old son was killed in a wreck, along Interstate 77, Friday afternoon with a tow truck. Troopers say he initially gave investigators a fake name.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, 6-year-old Chris Cordial, of Statesville, was killed in the crash near mile marker 45. It happened around 2:15 p.m.
Troopers say the tow truck was helping a disabled vehicle when a Ford F150, driving too fast for conditions, lost control and struck the back of the tow truck owned by Freeman’s Wrecker.
Cordial was in the pickup with his mother, father and 4-year-old sister. Investigators say all three were treated at the hospital after the wreck and have been released. The driver of the tow truck was not injured.
Troopers say Cordial was riding in a car seat at the time of the wreck.
The driver of the truck, Rosendo Lopez, was taken to the Iredell County jail and charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle. Lopez initially gave investigators a false name, according to officials. They believe they now have the correct name, but are awaiting fingerprints for positive identification.
