UNC identifies worker injured in Jan. 20 on-campus incident

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – A five-year employee of UNC-Chapel Hill was identified as the worker injured a Jan. 20 incident in a Dey Hall electrical closet.

Gaylen Bishop, 58, is still hospitalized following the incident.

Parts of campus lost power for nearly four hours after Bishop was injured.

Bishop was transported from the scene by EMS but eyewitnesses said he ran from the building on fire.

“It was from his legs area all the way up to his chest area. It was like most of his body was on fire,” eyewitness Aleksander Zhushma said.

OSHA is investigating the cause of the incident. OHSA said the victim came in contact with a live wire, which caused him to be badly burned.

No other information on the incident was released.
