CANTON, N.C. (WNCN) — A North Carolina baby boy died from blunt-force trauma on Sunday while his parents were in jail after an arrest in late January, according to officials and news reports.
A preliminary autopsy indicates that the Haywood County baby boy died Sunday morning from blunt-force trauma, according to the sheriff’s office.
The parents, Courtney Presnell, age 26, and Felicia Bumgarner, age 23, were arrested on Jan. 24 after a break-in at a tire center in Waynesville, WLOS-TV reported.
Their 17-month old son, Kyler Wayne Presnell, was then sent to live with grandparents in the Gibsontown community near Canton, where he died very early Sunday morning, the TV station reported.
Deputies were called to 192 Underwood Road at 4:22 am Sunday as part of a medical call for an unresponsive baby.
Responders could not revive Kyler and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The parents learned of the baby’s death while they were in jail, WLOS reported.
“We express our heartfelt condolences to the entire family of this child, and our thoughts and prayers are with them all,” Haywood Sheriff Greg Christopher told the Asheville Citizen Times.
The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for the family.
