DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — A man flipped his vehicle and crashed during a chase with
deputies but was caught after running away from the scene on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
The incident first started when a Durham County Sheriff’s deputy saw a driver run a red light on Avondale Drive near Interstate 85 at 2:49 p.m. Tuesday, the sheriff’s office said.
“The deputy attempted a traffic stop but the driver did not comply. Instead, the suspect drove off at a high rate of speed in an attempt to elude the deputy,” Tamara Gibbs , spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, said in a press release.
During the chase, the suspect wrecked his vehicle in the 1600 block of Camden Avenue. The vehicle flipped at least once and crashed into trees, before resting on its side in the roadway, according to a photo from the scene.
The driver then abandoned the car and then fled on foot through woods.
He was eventually caught and EMS transported the suspect to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries, Gibbs said.
Deputies will serve the suspect with arrest warrants for the following charges: failure to stop, resisting, delaying and obstructing, leaving the scene of an accident and possession of a stolen firearm, according to Gibbs.
