MARIETTA, Ohio (NBC News) – It’s a tail-wagging ending for a retired Ohio police officer and his K-9 partner.
Marietta city officials are allowing Officer Matt Hickey to keep his K-9 partner Ajax. They say Hickey will be made an auxiliary member of the Marietta Police Department so he can stay as Ajax’s handler.
Hickey retired last week, but under state law, he could not keep Ajax since the police pup is considered city property.
So Ajax was set to be auctioned off for an appraised value of $3,500. The community came together and raised more than $45,000 for Hickey to buy Ajax.
Hickey says he will donate the proceeds to an organization that provides bullet proof vests for K-9 officers.
