IRONDALE, Ala. (WIAT-TV) — Police say a 3-year-old Alabama boy has accidentally shot and killed his 9-year-old sister.
Irondale police Chief Ken Atkinson tells AL.com that the shooting took place around 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at their grandparents’ house on Monroe Drive in the Birmingham suburb of Irondale.
Atkinson tells WIAT-TV in Birmingham that the 3-year-old brother of the girl discovered the gun on a nightstand in the room the two were playing in. He accidentally pulled the trigger, shooting his sister in the head.
Atkinson says the family members who were home at the time did not know the gun was in the room the kids were playing in.
The gun was put in the room by another family member who was not home at the time, and did not know the children would be there, Atkinson said.
Detectives continue to interview family members, but believe that the shooting was a accident.
Atkinson says the incident seems to be a “tragic accident.”
The girl was flown with life-threatening injuries to Children’s of Alabama, where she later died, AL.com reports.
