Durham high school sees attendance drop after immigration raid

Acosta was taken into custody Jan. 28.

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – Attendance at Durham’s Riverside High School has dropped 20 percent since a student’s arrest in an immigration raid.

Riverside senior Wildin Acosta, who is currently in the custody of officials with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, came to the U.S. from Honduras in 2014.

Acosta’s family said he was on his way to school Jan. 28 when he was taken into custody by ICE agents.

An ICE spokesman said Acosta is in custody after a final removal order from an immigration judge. ICE officials said they could not say more about the specific cases due to the Privacy Act.

The Durham School Board voted to pass a resolution opposing the arrest of its students.

Immigration Alert has started sharing sightings on its FB page of ICE agents to warn illegal immigrants of their movements.
