LANDIS, N.C. (WBTV) – Police have charged a Landis mother after they say her 20-month-old child overdosed on pills.
Landis police said a family friend found Shannon Clement, 26, asleep in bed with her child at a home on S. Beaver Street in Landis. Officers said the friend found pills in the bed where the two were sleeping and called 911.
Police said the caller told dispatchers the child was unconscious, limp, with purple lips and “white stuff all over her face.” Officers said the child could be heard gasping for air in the background of the 911 call.
The Landis Fire Department, Rowan County EMS, and the Landis Police Department all responded to the scene. Police said the child was taken to a local hospital and is being treated for an overdose. They said the child is expected to make a full recovery.
Officers said Clement was charged with one count of Felony Child Abuse by Neglect, one count of Felony Maintaining a Dwelling for Controlled Substances, two counts of Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance, one count of Possession of a Schedule IV Controlled Substance, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Clement is in the Rowan County jail under a $90,000 secured bond, according to police.
