DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — A man in Durham County was stabbed to death after an argument with a neighbor and the neighbor has been charged with murder, authorities said.

Deputies with the Durham County Sheriff’s Office responded to a possible breaking and entering call in the 3400 block of Glenn Road on Saturday evening just before 9:15 p.m. and upon arrival, located 36-year-old Jose Luis Delatorre in the backyard of 3409 Glenn Road.

Detectives have determined that Delatorre was involved in an argument with Efren Ernesto Caballero-Martinez, 25.

Caballero-Martinez has been charged with first-degree murder and first-degree burglary. He has also been charged with assault on a female for assaulting Delatorre’s wife and 16-month-old child during the dispute.

The mother and child were treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.

WNCN spoke with a woman who says she is the suspect’s sister. She did not want to give her name or show her face.

“I can’t imagine, you know, a wife going through it and seeing it, what she had to be going through that. But, we do feel sorry and we’ll keep her in our prayers.”

She says as of Sunday afternoon, she had not yet spoken with her brother since his arrest

“If he can hear me right now, I just want you to know that I still love you and that God’s with you,” she said, talking to her brother.

The sister still is trying to figure out how it all happened.

“We’re all neighbors. We go to the same church, so I don’t see how this could have ended up like this. I just don’t understand and probably never will.”

Caballero-Martinez is current being held in the Durham County Detention Facility.

Anyone with information that could assist investigators should contact the Durham County Sheriff’s Office at (919) 560-0900.
