FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) – Fayetteville police used DNA evidence to link a 30-year-old man to a 2008 sexual assault cold case.
Joshua Wade Watson, of Luverne, Alabama faces charges of first-degree rape, first-degree sex offense and first-degree kidnapping.
The 34-year-old victim told police she was sexually assaulted on June 28, 2008 by two suspects in the 3100 block of Ft. Bragg Road.
Police were unable to identify the two suspects following an investigation. The case was made inactive at that time, police said.
The case was recently reopened by Fayetteville police’s Cold Case Sexual Assault Unit.
Watson and another suspect were identified as the suspects by DNA evidence.
The second suspect is now deceased.
Watson was apprehended in Luverne, Alabama by the Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Office.
He is being held in Alabama under no bond and is awaiting extradition back to North Carolina.
