CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – Three straight losses to Duke does not sit well with North Carolina senior guard Marcus Paige.
But seeing the Devils win a National Championship a year ago hurts even more. The Tar Heels felt they had a chance at that title.
Instead, a Sweet 16 loss to Wisconsin ended their season.
“Obviously in the rivalry you wish that was you,” explained Paige. “But at the same time for me it was watching Wisconsin get all the way there and saying ‘man we were maybe a half a step away from being able to compete at that same level.'”
Wisconsin would go on to reach the title game against Duke. That contest was watched by millions.
Roy Williams was not one of them.
“No knock against Duke but I watched Dancing with the Stars,” said Williams. “Why should I watch that game? My daughter wanted to watch Dancing with the Stars. I like my daughter more than cheering for Duke.”
Wednesday, Williams will be watching Duke as he looks to keep his Tar Heels atop the ACC standings.
And as far as ‘Ole Roy not watching last year’s championship game?
That’s OK with Coach K.
“Look, Roy and I are good friends,” explained Duke head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski. “Now that doesn’t mean we aren’t going to go at each other on Wednesday night but that comes with respect. I see that, I love that aspect of it. Now fans aren’t the same way.”
No, they’re not and every fan seems to have a favorite when it comes to the Battle of the Blues.
No. 5 North Carolina hosts No. 20 Duke at 9 p.m. on ESPN.
