Crews work to fix natural gas leak in Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – The Chapel Hill Fire Department responded to a natural gas leak at the construction site of the Carolina Square project on West Franklin Street across from 140 West.

The Town of Chapel Hill said the gas leak was contained.

One eastbound lane of West Franklin Street was temporarily closed for the placement of emergency response vehicles. The Chapel Hill Transit bus stop near the construction site was still open, but with limited access.

Town officials said the gas odor may continue to spread through Chapel Hill, but there is no immediate threat. to residents.

Officials asked people to avoid the area to allow crews to work on the repair and cleanup.
