KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC (WBTV) — Some North Carolina National Guard soldiers and others are being praised in Kings Mountain after a man was caught just seconds after a sexual assault of a minor girl.
The incident happened just across the street from the Guard Armory on Sunday.
As the girl was walking along the roadside, a man came up from behind her, grabbed her skirt and began to grope her. She yelled for help.
At the same time, guardsmen with the unit in Kings Mountain were on weekend drill duty within eyesight of what was happening. Several soldiers heard the cries for help and they along with other witnesses ran to assist her.
“She kept saying ‘Help me, Help me’,” said Sgt. Terry Neal.
As he ran out of the Armory, he saw two soldiers already near the girl. The man they believed was committing the assault had stopped and started walking away.
When the soldiers approached him, Neal says the man turned to them and apologized. As a bystander called police, the soldiers escorted the man back to the Armory.
Neal, who is a Highway Patrolman, checked the suspect for weapons, found none, and detained him until police arrived.
Kyle Moore, age 19, was then charged with sexual assault and sexual battery and jailed under of bond of $100,000. Police say the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
Neal says soldiers and civilians alike joined to catch the alleged culprit. He said it should be an example for everyone.
“We gotta be there for each other,” he said.
Police officials praised those involved for the way it was all handled. The victim, they say is a juvenile and was not physically hurt.
