GASTONIA, N.C. (WBTV) — A woman was sentenced to 18 months in prison in a wreck that killed her girlfriend in Gaston County last year.
Brittany Redeker, 23, was charged with fatal DWI in the crash that killed girlfriend Kaley Falls. The crash happened in June 2015.
Redeker’s attorney said the two were together for five years.
Redeker entered a plea deal Tuesday, crying and apologizing to Falls’ family in court.
“I lost the love of my life the day of that accident,” Redeker said.
About a dozen of Falls’ family members were in court Tuesday and told a judge they all loved Kaley.
In court, prosecutors said Redeker had consumed almost two times the legal limit of alcohol when the car she was driving crashed near the South Carolina state line.
“I’m so sorry that we are all sitting here right now, and there’s nothing that I would not do to trade places with her, or anything I would give to have her too,” Redeker told Falls’ family.
Redeker will spend 18 months in prison and then will be on probation for five years. If she violates any of the terms of the probation, she faces additional jail time.
She said her punishment pales in comparison to losing Falls, and the support from her family.
“I lost a part of myself, but I lost an entire family that I would have done anything I possibly could for and that’s why I understand my responsibilities with what has happened and what is done here,” Redeker said.
Falls family members did not wish to comment after the court appearance.
