North Carolina state attorneys defend new Congress map

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Attorneys for the state of North Carolina say the congressional map drawn by the General Assembly last month complies with the wishes of federal judges who ruled race played too large a role in previous lines.

The state’s lawyers filed documents defending the new boundaries that a three-judge panel ordered legislators to complete before congressional elections could be held.

The filing late Monday attempts to counter written arguments last week from voters who originally sued over the 2011 map. The plaintiffs say these new lines went too far by ignoring race and create an illegal partisan gerrymander. They want the judges to draw the map.

But the state’s attorneys say the updated map follows traditional redistricting criteria better than any congressional plan in recent memory.
