(CNN) – Amazon is looking into allowing shoppers to pay with a selfie.

The online retailer has filed a patent application for the technology.

The company argues the method of payment is more secure and less awkward than traditional passwords.

Customers would be able to take a photo or a short video of themselves to authenticate payments.

Amazon’s facial recognition system would ensure that it’s actually the customer – and not hackers, thieves or kids using their parents’ devices – who is making the purchase.

To prove you are real, the system would require you to blink, smile or tilt your head when taking the photo.

Amazon did not say when, if ever, the new technology would be available.
