Mercedes plows into stopped Highway Patrol SUV on I-40

CARY, N.C. (WNCN) – Three people were injured in a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 40 near the Interstate 440 interchange Wednesday afternoon.

A motorcyclist lost control of his vehicle after exiting U.S. 1/I-440 to I-40 and crashed.

A member of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol was near and stopped in a lane of travel with his lights on to assist the motorcyclist.

A Mercedes then plowed into the back of the stopped Highway Patrol SUV.

A three drivers were injured in the incidents and taken to the hospital.

Officials said the trooper has bump on head while the motorcyclist suffered serious injuries.

Exit 293-B ramp to I-440 East/U.S.-1 North was closed while authorities investigated the incident but reopened around 3:30 p.m.

Charges are pending in the accident, officials said.
