NC woman escapes armed man by jumping on school bus

HICKORY, NC (WBTV) – A woman was able to escape from a man with a gun in Catawba County after she reportedly ran onto a school bus to get away.

The incident happened around 7:35 a.m.Friday morning along the 2100-block of 25th St. Dr. NE in Hickory.

Deputies say the woman was backing out of her driveway when a man, later identified as 22-year-old Wesley Eric Wright, approached the driver side of her car with what appeared to be a black handgun. Wright reportedly tried to open the driver side door  and the passenger door.

The woman was able to drive down the street and later ran towards a school bus and was able to get on board to get away from Wright.

The Sheriff’s Office STAR team was training nearby and officers began searching for him. Wright was spotted a short time later running behind an EMS building and employees there called investigators.

About an hour after he reportedly approached her vehicle, Wright was arrested by Catawba County deputies. Deputies then located a large Black Ops Airsoft revolver with an eight-inch barrel, a ballcap and a bandana. Wright was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

He’s facing charges of felony attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and misdemeanor resisting a public office.
