NC boy who had heart transplant breathing on his own, off dialysis

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – A 13-year-old Burlington boy is breathing on his own and is off dialysis, his family reports, following heart transplant surgery more than a week ago.

Albert Jeffries IV, known as Alj, underwent a heart transplant in Chapel Hill and has been in the ICU for 10 days and in the hospital for 109 days.

His family has been asking for prayers for their son. After the surgery, initially his kidney function got worse, there was blood in his bowels, he was on a breathing machine and he needed dialysis.

Today, his mother Tina Turner announced good news through social media. She wrote that there is no more blood in his bowels, breathing tubes have been removed and he is no longer on dialysis.

“Heart is beating strong. Kidneys are working. Breathing tube removed and he’s breathing on his own!” she wrote. “He is awake and speaking but with a sore throat. Prayer works!”
