DURHAM, N.C. – Smith Middle School of Chapel Hill has captured the 2016 Quiz Bowl State Championship after defeating Mount Mourne School of Mooresville Saturday.
Mount Mourne took an early 70 to 25 lead, but Smith took over from there and lead 235 to 85 at the half. They lead by 150 or more the rest of the match and finally prevailed 410-260.
Students were quizzed on everything from the popular singer-songwriter Sia to the chemical makeup of methine and the Romanov dynasty.
On Smith’s undefeated team were Ankita Nandi (Captain), Ewan Mitchell, Kai Hoop, Benjamin McAvoy-Bickford and Sam Klosowski.
Both teams are now invited to the National Academic Quiz Tournaments Quiz Bowl Championship in May. Ligon Middle School of Raleigh came in fifth in the competition, which is sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Scholastic Activities.
Early College at Guilford defeated Providence of Charlotte in the high school championship match. Raleigh Charter High School took third while Carrboro High School finished in seventh.
Quiz Bowl is one of 23 competitions that will determine the best high school and middle school in the state. The NCASA Scholastic Cup and NCSSM Challenge Cup will be awarded to the high schools and middle schools with the best overall performance among the 20 major scholastic competitions in North Carolina. Points are awarded for participation and excellence in NCASA and partner competitions.
