Areas of downtown Greensboro evacuated after 2 explosions

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — Several streets were closed, damaged was reported and people were evacuated in downtown Greensboro after two explosions on Sunday night, various media sources reported.

Police spokeswoman Susan Danielsen said in a statement that the first blast occurred around 8:30 p.m. Sunday. The second one happened about 10 minutes later.

WFMY-TV reported that “multiple” streets were blocked. The News & Record in Greensboro later reported that two manhole covers exploded.

During the explosion at least one manhole cover flew up in the air on Washington Avenue in front of The Biltmore Hotel, police told the TV station.

Storefront windows were shattered, there was a hole in a wall and some vehicles were damaged in the explosions, photos from WFMY showed.

Police later said the explosion was caused by an electrical malfunction, according to WFMY.  Duke Energy is now investigating and there are some power outages downtown, the city of Greensboro said in a statement.

The News & Record reported the incident happened at Washington and Elm streets and blocked streets between Eugene and Davie streets.

“I heard what sounded like a big boom in downtown Greensboro about 30 mins ago (about 9 p.m.). Elm St. blocked at Natty Greene’s,” wrote WFMY reporter Meghann Mollerus on Twitter.

A dance competition at the Carolina Theater in downtown was evacuated after the explosion, according to a source. Police evacuated customers and workers at the Green Bean coffee house at 341 South Elm Street, the store’s owner said on Twitter.

It appeared that no one was injured.
