FOUR OAKS, N.C. (WNCN) — A person was hit by an Amtrak train in Four Oaks on Saturday afternoon, officials say.
Amtrak train 89, which runs from New York City to Savannah, hit a person on the tracks in Four Oaks around 3:37 p.m., an Amtrak official said.
Four Oaks Police Chief Stephen Anderson says the woman was helping to tie balloons for a party at a house in the town about 30 miles southeast of Raleigh before she was fatally struck Saturday.
Anderson says she was walking from the party site to another house across the tracks. Anderson says witnesses heard a train whistle but she apparently didn’t. Anderson says no charges are expected.
None of the 217 passengers and crew aboard the train were hurt, according to Amtrak.
The train resumed its route at 7:12 p.m. Saturday evening.
