According to authorities, a Robbins police officer tried to stop the man for speeding downtown.

That is when Velazquez tried to elude the officer going as fast as 120 MPH, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The officer in pursuit lost sight of the driver, ultimately driving around a curve to find Velazquez’s vehicle had crashed into the tree.

Officials say the man’s body was sent to Raleigh for an autopsy.

There is an ongoing investigation into the accident and police pursuit.
