SANFORD, N.C. (WNCN) — A Sanford man is charged after a toddler boy who was in his care last week was injured and died on Monday, officials say.
The incident was first discovered as an “unresponsive child” call on Thursday just after 8 p.m. at to 105 Gordon Street Apt 3 in Sanford, Sanford Police said.
“Upon officers’ arrival they found a 3-year-old male child who was unresponsive,” police said in a press release.
Emergency Medical Services were on scene and the child was immediately transported to the Central Carolina Hospital Emergency Room, police said.
“Further investigation revealed that the three-year-old child had sustained injuries to his head and body,” police said.
The child’s caregiver at the time was Michael Amatucci, police said.
The little boy was later air lifted to UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital for the injuries. On Monday, the boy was declared deceased from the injuries by UNC-CH Hospital officials.
Michael Anthony Amatucci, age 28, of Gordon Street was charged on Friday with felony child abuse inflicting serious physical injury.
He was detained in the Lee County Jail under $100,000 secured bond. Additional charges are pending.
