CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — Hundreds of UNC Chapel Hill fans took to Franklin Street on Saturday night just after the Tar Heels secured a spot in the NCAA finals — solidly beating Syracuse, 83-66.
UNC now takes on Villanova on Monday night for the tournament crown.
The Tar Heels fans on Saturday night converged near Top of the Hill Restaurant at Columbia Street and Franklin Street, which is typically where most celebrations start after major Tar Heel wins.
By 11 p.m. the intersection was nearly filled with fans, but there were no reports of bonfires, which usually are lit after major wins. By 11:45 fans started leaving the area.
The last big celebration on Franklin Street was on March 5 when UNC beat Duke. There were several bonfires seen that night and the peak crowd size was estimated to be 15,000 people, police said.
