DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – Two Durham Police officers were assaulted while investigating a home for suspicion of drugs on the night of April 8, Durham Police said.
A video of the incident posted to the Internet has gained more than 100,000 views on Facebook and sparked hundreds of comments.
Shortly before 10:30 p.m. officers from the High Enforcement Abatement Team (HEAT) 2 were following up on a previous drug arrest in the 3400 block of Misty Pine Avenue. When the homeowner opened the door, officers smelled a strong odor of marijuana and secured the residence.
According to police, two officers were assaulted during the incident. Khadir Cherry, 25, allegedly attempted to grab an officer’s gun and refused to obey the officer’s orders. Raynell Hall, 42, hit an officer in the shoulder. Officers used a Taser on Hall and an officer hit Cherry with a baton “in the area between the hip and the knee,” police said.
The Durham Police Department is investigating all matters concerning this incident including the use of force, which is standard protocol, police said.
Three arrests were made and warrants were obtained for the homeowner, Vera McGriff. She was not arrested on the scene because there were two juveniles in the home who could not be left unattended.
Khadir Cherry was arrested and charged with two counts of possession with intent to manufacture, sell and/or distribute, maintaining a dwelling, two counts of assault on a government official, resisting a public officer, and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.
Raynell Hall was arrested and charged with assault on a government official and resisting a public officer.
