Tennessee inmate dies less than 12 hours after being booked into jail

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after an inmate died less than 12 hours after being booked into jail Monday.

Tawnya Smith was found unresponsive in her cell at 11:10 a.m. during routine hourly security checks by jail deputies.

Jail medical staff and emergency workers performed CPR and applied an AED but were unable to resuscitate the 31-year-old woman.

The initial investigation indicated there were no visible signs of injury or trauma. An autopsy will be conducted.

The investigation is ongoing.

Smith was jailed for two counts of child abuse and neglect, simple possession and unlawful drug paraphernalia just after midnight Monday.
