CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – A water main break left a neighborhood near UNC’s campus without running water for most of Tuesday morning.
Crews responded to a water main break on E. Rosemary Street around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday morning near Henderson and Hillsborough streets.
E. Rosemary Street was closed as crews worked to repair the ruptured water main. The break created a big sink hole in the middle of the street.
Chapel Hill Police encouraged drivers to avoid the area Tuesday morning.
CBS North Carolina was told that a contractor had been doing some work in the area where the break occurred, but it’s not clear what caused the pipe to give way.
Most of the repair work is taking place near the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority house.
“I notified the girls by email and that’s what it is. It is what it is. You’ve got to deal with this sort of stuff,” said Nancy Korcheck, House Director of Alpha Chi Omega.
Officials said they hope to have to the water back on by mid-afternoon. Officials said fixing the road would take longer.
