SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WECT) – A local soldier surprised his fiancée Thursday after coming home from more than a year serving overseas.
U.S. Army PFC Conner Wilson hid in the hall during a JROTC awards ceremony at South Brunswick High School.
His fiancée, KaLeigh Wescott, was on stage being recognized for her accomplishments.
“I feel like I owed it to her to give her a surprise,” Wilson said. “I felt like it’d be the sweetest thing to do. I’m feeling pretty anxious. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time now.”
Wescott’s JROTC teacher talked about how she is dedicated to her soldier abroad.
Wilson then walked out to a surprised Wescott accompanied by a loud applause from the audience.
“When he first came in through the door, it was a split second of ‘what’s going on?’ then I realized it was him, and I just took off,” Wescott said. “I was excited and I was just…I don’t know, there’s a lot of emotions going on at once, but the most was I’m happy that he’s home. He’s finally home.”
Wilson and Wescott said they’re looking forward to spending time together now that Wilson is home.
