WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WXII) — No charges will be filed in the death of a woman during a domestic assault Wednesday night, Winston-Salem police said.
Doris Caldwell, 53, died at the hospital following an incident just after 11 p.m. at her home on Dacian Street off Sprague Street. Caldwell died of asphyxiation, police said on Friday.
Police said that Caldwell was the aggressor in the assault, which involved an unidentified person who was in a relationship with her. The incident began when Caldwell chased the other person around the home while swinging a machete, police said.
“The victim unsuccessfully attempted to flee the assailant (Caldwell) before finally grabbing the assailant around her neck and lying on top of her while holding her on the floor,” police said in a statement.
The other person called emergency officials after Caldwell stopped the assault, police said.
Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill decided not to file charges after reviewing the evidence, police said. The other person has cooperated fully during the investigation, police said.
