PROSPERITY, S.C. (WSPA) – The Superintendent of Newberry County Schools was killed after a crash involving a Newberry County Sheriff’s Deputy Saturday night.
The Highway Patrol says the deputy had his lights and sirens going as he was responding to a call around 6:40 pm. Troopers say the deputy’s patrol car crashed with a second vehicle at the intersection of SC-219 and Chapman Drive. The deputy was flown to the hospital but is expected to be OK.
Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton said that the driver of the other vehicle, 56-year-old Bennie D. Bennett, of Prosperity, died at the scene. Bennett was superintendent for the past 10 years and leaves behind a wife and two children.
“He served Newberry County schools with professionalism, passion and pride,” Newton said of Bennett. “He was truly a people person who loved his Lord, family, and friends. He will be missed.”
The accident is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
