BENSON, N.C. (CBS North Carolina) – A man was hit by an Amtrak train and killed Sunday morning in Benson, police said.
Aaron Scott Gill, 44, of Newton Grove, was hit at approximately 1:40 a.m. near the U.S. Highway 301 overpass. Police said they don’t have any information as to why Gill was in Benson or why he was on the roadway at the time of the incident.
A CBS North Carolina viewer said they were on Amtrak train 98 to New York City’s Penn Station when the train “encountered a big bang” before the conductor slammed on the brakes. The viewer said Amtrak officials could be seen walking up and down the tracks with flashlights.
Amtrak officials said none of the 298 passengers or crew on board were injured. The train was delayed for approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes.
First responders and police finished their investigation around 8 a.m. and Gill’s body has been sent for an autopsy to be performed Monday.
