CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Two parents have been charged in the death of their infant daughter.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say they found 9-month-old Tayara Beecham unresponsive in a home on Winter Elm Lane Sunday night. The baby girl was taken to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment, but she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Detectives say the infant was physically assaulted.
Basheba Freeman and Taquan Beecham were charged with homicide due to child abuse and taken to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Neighbors on Winter Elm Lane said they would have never expected this incident. Multiple residents said they were friendly with Beecham and would often see him walking through the neighborhood to get groceries.
“I just couldn’t believe anything like that would ever happen-he could be capable of doing that. He seemed really nice all the time,” said neighbor Tiffany Brussel.
Neighbor Carrie Bane said police officers came to her door late Sunday night looking for information. She said her neighborhood has always seemed quiet until now.
“It’s soul crushing to think that just a few feet down the street from us that that happened,” said Bane.
Bane said she has a child of her own and explained that hearing of this situation hit home for her.
“It made me hug my daughter a little bit longer and a little bit tighter this morning. It’s very hard to understand.”
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
