Body of Army vet recovered from Harris Lake

NEW HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – Officials said a body recovered from Harris Lake Wednesday is that of a 62-year-old Army veteran who fell into the water while fishing. The family confirmed it was Dale Justus.

Chatham County officials received a call for a possible drowning at Harris Lake Wednesday morning at 9:22 a.m.

Justus, a retired Army vet from Fayetteville, became tangled in the rope for the anchor when he fell in, fire officials said.

Justus and other retired members of the Army like to come to Harris Lake from Fayetteville to fish often in Harris Lake, friends said.

Justus usually fished from the pier at the boat dock but today decided to join another friend on a boat, said James Henley. Henley said his friend told him the victim fell overboard while trying to tie off the boat.

The Moncure Fire Department used sonar to locate the body.

No other information was released.
