CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Four students from East Mecklenburg High School were arrested for reportedly assaulting a man in late April, according to sources.
Christalsia Harris, 18, Kara Gordon, 17, Jonathan Murphy, 18, and Marquis Hartage, 18, are all charged with assault inflicting serious bodily injury. Sources told WBTV that all four attend East Mecklenburg High.
The arrest warrants show the victim was beaten so badly there was bleeding on his brain and he lost consciousness.
The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. on April 27, on the 6000 block of Independence Boulevard. According to the officials police report, the assault happened in the parking lot of a car dealership.
WBTV was told that police have surveillance video of the beating that sources say includes about ten people.
“School is supposed to be about education,” East Mecklenburg High School uncle Charles Young said. “Not somewhere to be feared.”
WBTV went by the homes of the students allegedly involved. At the 17-year-old suspect’s home, her father told us he has hired a lawyer to defend his daughter. He said he also spent part of the day trying to get her back in school.
A person who didn’t want to be identified told WBTV the victim was possibly homeless and mentally unstable. He claims the victim attacked a student the day before he was assaulted.
“A grown person out here messing with kids,” the anonymous person said. “That’s what it seems like. You got guys living in the woods by the school.”
The person didn’t say the incident was in retaliation, but is concerned many homeless people are leaving uptown and coming near the school.
“Some of these street people,” he said. “That’s out here into these neighborhoods.”
WBTV asked the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to respond to these allegations, but the department declined.
The victim, a 31-year-old man, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries. His current condition has not been released.
