DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – A former Durham high school teacher could face more charges – nearly two years after first being arrested.
Michelle Smith is accused of having a sexual relationship with a female student while she was a dance teacher at Jordan High School. She was charged in July 2014.
Smith resigned from her position during the investigation into the relationship.
She appeared in court Friday.
Prosecutors say they are still going through devices that contain evidence, including photos, which could lead to additional charges.
The judge granted a request from the parents of the victim, who asked that Smith not be allowed in certain parts of Durham to avoid contact between the two.
The father, who asked his identity not be made public to protect his daughter, told the judge, “It’s been a long and difficult journey. I would ask the court not to be fooled by the defendant’s appearance. She is a practiced predator. She grooms, she separates and she molests.”
Smith’s attorney declined to speak to the media after court.
