CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Around 50,000 pounds of potatoes spilled in a tractor-trailer crash Friday morning, closing part of Interstate 77 near uptown Charlotte.

Troopers say the driver of a tractor-trailer fell asleep behind the wheel on I-77 southbound near Exit 9B, causing him to hit a concrete barrier and spill the potatoes across the highway. It happened around 2 a.m.

Crews are working to clean up the spill and hope to have all lanes reopened by 8 a.m.

“Traffic flowing south is being detoured around downtown. Motorists should take Exit 11 on to I-277, loop around the downtown area, then take exit 1-B to return to I-77 South and continue on their route,” the NCDOT recommends.

The driver of the tractor-trailer went to the hospital with minor injuries. No one else was hurt in the crash.
