WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A pizza delivery driver is facing charges after she plowed into oncoming traffic resulting in the death of a pedestrian.
Lacoltus Grady, 36, of Wilmington, died in the crash. Brittany Boddiford, 22, of Wilmington was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, driving left of center, exceeding the posted speed limit and simple possession of a schedule VI substance.
According to Linda Rawley with the Wilmington Police Department, the accident happened around 6 p.m. Boddiford, a Domino’s delivery driver, was returning to the store on Carolina Beach Road after making a delivery. She was driving a Mercury Mountaineer.
Grady was standing next to his parked car on the driver’s side when Boddiford reached for her cell phone, drifted left and entered the oncoming lane. She sideswiped Grady’s vehicle and hit a moving truck head on, which caused Grady to be thrown over the hood of the moving truck and onto the ground.
EMS performed CPR on Grady and he was taken to NHRMC, where he later died.
Grady’s mother, Vanessa Patrick, said he was getting in his car to go to his girlfriend’s house when he was hit. She said he worked for Land Care, a lawn care company in Castle Hayne.
Boddiford was placed under a $1,000 secured bond and taken to the New Hanover County Jail.
