TABLE ROCK MOUNTAIN, NC (WBTV) — Officials say a climber fell about 150 to 200 feet down Table Rock mountain Saturday.
Rescuers were able to get to the injured climber with a Blackhawk helicopter.
According to officials, the fall wasn’t straight down the mountain. They believe the man hit and rolled down the side of mountain before losing consciousness. He is now alert.
Rescue crews were hoping a Blackhawk could get to where the man fell, but they were hesitant because of high winds. If the helicopter didn’t work, crews would have had to carry him out. They estimated that would have taken a dozen people hours to hike through the steep terrain.
Crews say the man had serious leg injuries, but was conscious when they got to him. From the Blackhawk, he was transferred to a second helicopter and then flown to the hospital.
Table Rock Mountain is located off NC 181 near Linville Falls in the Pisgah National Forest, Grandfather Ranger District, the website VisitNC says.
Known as Burke County’s natural landmark, Table Rock towers at 3950 feet above sea level.
