RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) —  One Fayatteville family is already getting the Christmas gifts ready.

The Mathis’ headed to Raleigh Saturday. They drove down a 26 foot U-Haul truck to Vector Security on the 5600 block of Chapel Hill Road to collect donated bicycles from 10 AM to 3 PM.

Their efforts started back in 1990 with Moses Mathis who saw a need in the community

He decided to donate just one bike to a child in need.

Mathis later started an outreach program out of his warehouse and since then the family has collected nearly 30,000 bikes and donated them across the nation to children who are often from low-income families.

“The Bicycle Man” died three years ago, but his family is keeping the tradition alive.

“My husband loved children and just to see the smiles on their faces at Christmas time when they receive a bike is worth more than the accolades that we get for doing it,” Mathis’ wife, Ann said.

His widow and longtime partner in “The Bicycle Man” effort, Ann now serves as CEO of the organization. Mathis says she promised her husband she would keep the movement alive well after his death, and she plans to do just that.

“We never have a goal in mind when we do this. Whatever happens, happens,” she explained. “Usually, we get that truck full when we get to this area.”

You can donate to the organization by bringing your gently-used or new bicycle to 1800 Wynfare Drive Fayatteville, NC 28306.
