Greensboro man arrested in connection with 5 Durham armed robberies

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – A Greensboro man has been charged in connection with five armed robberies that occurred in early April in Durham, police said.

Justin Edward Spears, 25, was charged in connection with five armed robberies that occurred over one week beginning on April 6. The robberies primarily targeted victims in apartment complex parking lots.

The incidents Spears faces charges for:

  • April 6 in the 1800 block of Chapel Hill Road – Two men were standing in a parking lot when a man believed to be Spears approached them, pointed a gun at them and demanded everything in their pockets. Spears was charged with two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of second-degree kidnapping, two counts of assault by pointing a gun, and two counts of felony conspiracy.
  • April 12 in the 3500 block of Mayfair Street – Two men were in a parking lot when a man believed to be Spears approached them armed with a gun and demanded their phones. One victim at first refused to give up his phone and the suspect fired several shots, damaging two vehicles in the parking lot. Spears was charged with two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and two counts of injury to property.
  • April 12 on Snowcrest Trail – A man and woman were walking across a parking lot shortly before 9:30 p.m. when a man believed to be Spears approached them with a gun in each hand and demanded their wallets. A car drove by, startling the suspect, and he fled without taking anything. Spears was charged with two counts of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of assault by pointing a gun and two counts of second-degree kidnapping.
  • April 12 on Snowcrest Trail – A man was standing outside an apartment around 9:50 p.m. when a man believed to be Spears approached him and asked for a cigarette. The man then pulled out two guns and demanded money. Spears was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, second-degree kidnapping, and assault by pointing a gun.
  • April 12 on Copper Ridge Road – The victim was in a parking lot around 10:30 p.m. when a man believed to be Spears approached the victim with a gun in each hand and took his phone, dress pants and other items. Spears was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault by pointing a gun, and second-degree kidnapping.

The arrest warrants were served on Spears in the Guilford County Jail. He was moved Sunday to the Durham County Jail, where he is currently being held under a $485,000 bond.

Spears was also charged with possession of a stolen vehicle on April 14 after a vehicle was taken on April 13 from House Avenue. Officers from HEAT 3 attempted to stop the vehicle near Mayfair Street but the driver did not stop until Pinecrest Road. Spears jumped out of the vehicle and was caught after a brief foot chase, police said.
